Macrognathus siamensis, Peacock Spiny Eel, Siamese Spiny Eel, Spot-Finned Spiny Eel, Striped Peacock Eel

The Peacock Eel or Macrognathus siamensis is a very pretty spiny eel that is not often found in this industry. There can be some color variations in its colors and patterns. These fish are basically a light brown in color with a pale yellow stripe running from the eye to the base of the tail. The name Peacock Eel owns it’s name because they have between three to six eye spots adorning the upper rear portion of the body along the base of the dorsal fin. Although these are not considered to be true eels, the body shapes of all members of the spiny eel family, Mastacembelidae are definitely eel-like.

Peacock Spiny Eels are very hardy and make a great starter fish for first time spiny eel keepers. It readily adapts to aquarium life and accepts food easily. It is relatively small with its maximum adult size just under a foot long.

Peacock Eels are a peaceful fish that can be kept in most any community tanks with larger fish.
