Red Cherry Shrimp
Neocaridina denticulata
sinensis

a.k.a. Minami Numa Ebi, or Taiwan Shrimp

Size: Up to 3/4" pH:6.3 - 8.2, Temp: 70-82,  Origin: Taiwan

The Red Cherry Shrimp are very unique and can only be found in limited areas of Taiwan until now. Red Cherry Shrimp eat many more types of algae unlike the Caridina japonica (Amano shrimp) which are more limited to just hair algae and detritus, and are currently regarded as the best cleaners for fish tanks. These bright red colored Cherry Shrimp enrich the look of any fish tank, and provide a high value of appreciation to fresh water aquaria.  These egglaying shrimp are fairly easy to breed, easy to care for, and just look at the above numbers for required temp, and pH, what more do you want in a shrimp?  These are tough, resilient, and amazing little shrimp that have taken the aquarium hobby by storm in 2003.  About 1/2 the size of Amano Shrimp with beautiful red coloration on males, less red on females (hardly noticeable).  SIMPLE to care for, and chances are good that they will breed in your tank.  Combats many more types of algae than most other shrimp.

Please note these are tiny shrimp that eat large amounts of algae.  Our red cherry's co-exist with our Adult SAE's, and we do not have any issues with compatibility.  Use Common Sense: If you have large carnivorous fish, these could end up being their dinner.  Size at shipping varies but range from about 1/4" and up.

Stocking Ratio: 5 shrimp per1 gallon.

Amano Algae Eating Shrimp   Caridina japonica

a.k.a. Japanese Marsh Shrimp, or Grass Shrimp, Amano Shrimp  temp: 7 - 28 C  pH: 6 - 8

Size: up to 1.25",  pH: 6-8,  GH: 8,  Temp: 7-28 C,  Origin: Japan

These are very popular shrimp mainly due to the exposure they've received with Takashi Amano's series of books. They are very versatile shrimp (like the Red-Cherry Shrimp), and they can handle similar water conditions cold/warm water, acid/alkaline water, hard/soft water.  They can be sensitive to very high pH, and having a casualty or two when shipping is not uncommon.  Max size we've seen is 1.75".  Great for green hair algae and detritus.  Size at shipping: about 1/2"+.

Stocking Ratio: 1 or 2 shrimp per 1 gallon.

Singapore Wood Shrimp  Atyopsis moluccensis

a.k.a. Flower Shrimp

Size: Up to 4",  pH: 6.5 - 7.4, Temp: 72-85,  Origin: Singapore

These are one of the largest shrimp we offer.  Female shrimp are about 2.5 to 3" in length or about the size of a man's pinky finger, and Male shrimp in this species can be even larger to the size of a man's index finger.  They are sensitive to cold water, high pH, and high GH.

Singapore shrimp are one of the best filter feeders, and will stay near the top of the water's surface or near the outlet flow of a mechanical filter.  Singapore's do not do well in bare-bottom tanks, and prefer a well planted aquarium.  They will colonize on driftwood, so buy a grouping of them for best results!

Quoted from Joe Anderson's web page: "The Wood/Singapore shrimp is a filter feeding shrimp and has two pair of specialized webbed, fan-like, appendages instead of claws. They use these to filter algae and microorganisms from the water, effectively acting as a biochemical filtration system!" click here for a pic that really shows the filter feeding claws.

African Giant Filter Shrimp  Atya gabonensis

a.k.a. African Fan Shrimp, Vampire Shrimp

Size: up to 4"  pH: 6.5 - 7.4, Temp: 74-88,  Origin: West Africa, Eastern South America

These ARE the largest, newest  shrimp we offer.  ULTRA RARE!!!! These are NOT wild caught.  Ours are all farm raised.

CARE:  Require almost identical water conditions and have similar behavior patterns as a Singapore Shrimp (see above)  These will also colonize on driftwood, so buy a grouping of them for best results!  Absolutely 100% harmless as they have no way to hurt or injure other aquatic animals, so these are ideal for many community tanks.

Size at shipping: about 2 to 3".

Malaysian Rainbow Shrimp   Caridina sp. Rainbow

a.k.a. Spear shrimp

Size: up to 1"  pH: 6.5+7.5,   Temp: 20 to 25C  Origin: India

These are becoming very popular with aquarists as they are inexpensive shrimp and YES they do eat green hair algae!  We have had some awesome colors appear on our Rainbow's (hence the name Rainbow Shrimp).  We have seen Bright Blue, Rust Red to Dark Brown, Deep Yellow/Tan, and some other colors.  They are about the same size as a Red Cherrys or maybe a hair bigger.  The picture above shows a Rainbow shrimp in a more Blue coloration.  Combats Green Hair Algae.  Size at shipping: assorted about 1/2" and up.

Stocking Ratio: 1 shrimp per 1/4 gallon.

Brazilian Yellow-Belly Grass Shrimp
Palaemon pantanal

a.k.a. Large Brazil Ghost shrimp

Size: up to 1.5"  pH: 6.4 - 7.8,  Temp: 48 to 89F can handle more extreme cooler temps as long as they are gradual,  Origin: Brazil

Not to be mistaken with the cheap feeder ghost shrimp you may find in your local pet store, same genus, but different species and South American!  These are beautiful, lanky shrimp that will add amusement and be truly beneficial for combating many types of noxious algae from freshwater aquaria. Click here for another pic to show our typical shipping size. Very EZ to care for, no real special requirements, except ammonia sensitive as most shrimp are!  Combats many types of algaes especially ground cover algae.  A larger sized shrimp that's a little bigger than an Amano shrimp at maturity.  Ideal shrimp for out door ponds where temps might be colder.  This shrimp does better in cooler water than warm.  Size at shipping: assorted about 1/2" and up.

Stocking Ratio: 1 shrimp per 1/2 gallon.

Rudolph Red-Nosed Shrimp
Caridina gracilirostris.

a.k.a. Rhino Shrimp, Red-Fronted Shrimp,  Rudolph Shrimp, Red-Stripe Shrimp

Size: up to 3/4"  pH: versatile   Temp: versatile  Origin: India

Our 2nd most popular shrimp to our Red Cherry's since we announced their arrival in August. Maybe it's their Rhino-like nose?  Like the Red-Cherry's, they can handle just about any water condition, but are sensitive to very high pH and Ammonia (geez, what isn't?),  Max size we have seen is about an inch or just under.  Beautiful, beneficial, and entertaining shrimp!  Great for hair algae and algae on your plant's delicate leaves.  A must for all planted aquariums.  Obviously you will not add these to a tank with hungry large carnivores, but these are compatible with all small peaceful community fish and all of the shrimp we sell.  Pictured above is a nicely colored Male.  Females are smaller, less colorful or mostly clear, but without them, there can be no reproduction, which should occur in your aquarium if you have proper brackish conditions.  Last thing....unlike most shrimp, Rudolph's are true swimmers, as opposed to most other shrimp, which typically just walk around.  Size at shipping: assorted about 1/2" and up..

Stocking Ratio: up to 1 shrimp per 1/2 gallon.

Bumble Bee Shrimp
Caridina
trifasciata

a.k.a. Bee Shrimp, Black & White Shrimp, Ninja Shrimp

Size: 1/4 up to 3/4"  pH: versatile, ours are kept on the slightly acid side 6.6 - 6.8   Temp: versatile  Origin: Japan

These are one of our newest shrimp that have been sought after by many folks in North America!  Max size we have is about 1/2 inch or slightly larger, but on the fat side, unlike most of our other shrimp which are sort of on the "skinny" side.  Males and females are colored equally, so sexing them is hard if not impossible.   These are a "Cleaner" shrimp, which means they are more of a scavenger/filter feeder, picking debris and detritus off wood, rocks, decorations, etc.  These typically like hanging out where there is a good flow of water on large pieces of wood, or in the leaves of plants.  They camouflage themselves in the wood like a chameleon.  These shrimp usually import from overseas coming in black/yellow but some may turn a red and white color after a few weeks eating our foods.  We have not yet successfully bred these.  Size at shipping is usually full grown about 1/2" to max 3/4"

Stocking Ratio: up to 1 shrimp per 1/2 gallon.

White Spotted Pearl Shrimp   Macrobrachium mirabile

formerly known as "Snowflake Shrimp"

Size: 1/2 to 2"  pH: versatile   Temp: versatile  Origin: India

The Pearl shrimp may just be the ticket for your aquariums with larger fish as these semi- aggressive shrimp have the ability to fight off some predators and also might eat your smaller fish.  Sometimes categorized in the Long Arm or Claw Shrimp family, these shrimp will thrive in either brackish to completely freshwater environments with cave dwellings or crevices to hide in.   These shrimp will NOT aggressively attack other shrimp, but they will defend themselves if attacked.  Size at shipping is usually full grown about 3/4 to 1"

Stocking Ratio: up to 1 shrimp per gallon.

Cherax Blue Lobster

Cherax quadricarinatus "Blue"

a.k.a. Blue Yabbie Lobster, Red-Claw "Blue" Crayfish,

Size: Up to 12"  pH: 6.5 - 8.3 , Temp: 72-85,  Origin: New Guinea

This is a semi-aggressive omnivore scavenger, that WILL eat all of the left over food your fish miss, as well as detritus and other waste off the bottom of your aquarium.  Although this lobster will eat dead or dying fish as well, it is just too slow to catch healthy fish.  Colors can change from bright blue or camouflage to a bluish-brown to hide from predators.  We'd say these lobsters are easy, if not simple, to keep and care for.  You can supplement feed them New Life Spectrum H20 Stable Wafers if needed.

Size at shipping: about 3".and up

Stocking Ratio: 1 per 5 gallons, or more if you have plenty of hiding spaces.

Electric Blue Crayfish

Procambarus alleni

Size: Up to 8" commonly in aquarium pH: 6.5 - 8.3 , Temp: 65-85  Origin: Everglades

This is a fairly peaceful to semi-aggressive omnivore scavenger, that will eat all of the left over food your fish miss, as well as detritus and other waste off the bottom of your aquarium.  Like the Cherax Blue Yabbie Lobster we sell, twill eat dead or dying fish, but this is just too slow to catch healthy fish.  It is noted that they can change color to hide from certain predators, but only in rare instances.  This crayfish is VERY colorful and is an ultra nice addition to most aquariums and very simple to keep.  He MUST have it's own shelter/hiding place for it to feel safe.  You can house many of them together ONLY if they each have their own homes.  At our hatchery, we keep 50 or more of them per pool, and we use cut pieces of pvc pipe so they all have a place they call home.  On a less commercial level, like a home aquarium, you should use rocks or wood to build little caves or etc.  You can supplement feed them New Life Spectrum H20 Stable Wafers if needed.

Size at shipping: about 2" .and up

Stocking Ratio: 1 per 5 gallons, or more if you have plenty of hiding spaces.

Iodine

Keep your Shrimp Healthy!  Dose with Iodine once a month!

A small dose of Kent's Super Iodine to your freshwater aquarium with added Shrimp is extremely beneficial.  Since this product is typically used in Saltwater aquaria and in dosages of 1 teaspoon per 50 gallons every week, our nursery uses just a 1/2 teaspoon per 25 gallons 1 time per month to aid in the health and development of strong shrimp, that goes for all invertebrates too!  We have been dosing our pools with Iodine for a about a year and a half now and our shrimp are more healthy, more active, eager to breed, and have also noticed an increase in successful egg hatching as well,  it will not harm your freshwater plants or other freshwater fish when used in this small trace amount.

Use 1/2 teaspoon per 25 gallons, once a month!

Our 8 ounce bottle should last you quite a long time!

What to feed your shrimp?

  • For a great selection of food to offer your beloved shrimp Fish Foods

Try New Life Spectrum's H2O Stable Wafers & Hikari's Crab Cuisine

IMPORTANT: DO NOT OVERFEED YOUR ANIMALS!!!   They are not built like humans, they metabolize food slowly and overfeeding them will KILL them, feed them very infrequently.  You are hiring great Janitors that know how to to take care of themselves, let them do their job and leave them alone.  :-)

How many shrimp do I buy?

  • We can't stress this to you enough, don't waste your time buying just one shrimp, or buying one shrimp of each species.  Consider this: These shrimp live in huge colonies, so plan on buying a group of each variety for best results.  Also consider that you may lose some shrimp in transit, or during acclimation.  Some people think that if they order 2 of each kind of shrimp they will get pairs, not likely, we don't sell sexed animals, and again, you may lose some during transit or acclimation.  Lastly, in every table of each shrimp we list a stocking ratio, this may help you determine how many shrimp to purchase.

The Shrimp Factory Bulletin Board

1.  SHRIMP COMPATIBILITY?  The most common question we are asked about our shrimp is...."Can I mix these shrimp with other species of shrimp?"  The Answer: YES.  You can mix any of the shrimp we sell here at our website, as they all co-exist with each other just fine, however, you may want to use caution mixing these species as some may inter-breed with each other causing hybrids.

2.  TRY SOME SPINACH AS A GREAT SUPPLEMENT FOR YOUR SHRIMP!-Next time you run to your local grocery store, remember to stop at the freezer section and pick up a package of frozen "chopped" spinach for your inverts!  It costs about a buck or less and should last a while.  Make sure the ingredients on the box say: Ingredients: Spinach.  Bring it home, and smash it with a hammer into little chunks.  Here at the nursery, we usually re-bag it into a fish bag and store it in our deep freezer.   We feed ALL of our shrimp and snails this as a very healthy snack about 1 or 2 times per week.  Don't forget that shrimp MUST have protein in their diet, this is why you might see them eating other dead shrimp or fish.  They are not just herbivores, they are omnivores.   Make sure you supplement their diet regularly with a good source of protein, click here for supplements that we use at the nursery.

3.  ICH TREATMENTS AND COPPER USUALLY AFFECT YOUR SHRIMP! Shrimp, inverts and most scale-less fish are sensitive to most Ich medicatons and other chemicals containing copper. (Read on)  Amano shrimp and Tiger shrimp can sometimes handle Ich treatments when used in 1/2 dosages, the tough will usually survive, the weak ones will expire.  The tough ones will molt shortly thereafter, so you won't want to treat again too soon.  A better idea, buy a small hospital tank for your sick fish. (i.e. Eclipse makes great, inexpensive, and complete 2 and 3 gallon tanks)  Check for additives like methylene blue, and malachite green that you put into your aquarium (usually ich meds), that goes for ingredients in your food too, check the ingredients label on your fish food, if Copper is near the top of the ingredients list, it is usually going to harm your shrimp and shorten their life!  Copper is usually introduced from your tap water's HOT side, never use it, instead, if using tap water, use the COLD side only.  We are testing a product that WILL be safe for scale-less fish and inverts, that we will be offering here soon as soon as our testing is complete.

4.  THE MORTALITY OF SHIPPING SHRIMP AND SEXING SHRIMP!  All too often customers will order a small sampling of assorted shrimp, or want an even mix of males/females.  This is fine, but please think about this--you may have some losses.  Usually these guys will ship fine, but you should count on some losses from the stressful transit.  It sure won't be worth it for you to have to pay for the shipping on replacing a few dead shrimp.  If you were counting on having 2 or 3 pairs of a particular kind of shrimp and some die, then in this case you will wish you would have ordered more.  We always suggest purchasing a few more than you need.  The shipping won't be any more if you bought 2 shrimp or 10.  This is not a sales ploy, but the reality is that fish and shrimp do die in transit.  We offer live arrival guarantee and we'll credit your in-house account for losses or replace them for free, but the customer is always responsible for the shipping fees.   Lastly, all too often we are asked to send pairs of shrimp, but we DO NOT sell sexed animals.  It is far too difficult to sex shrimp, it is about as easy to sex a gnat or a flea than a shrimp.  In a case with Singapore Shrimp, which you can sometimes tell the difference at a glance, so we will send a mixed amount of males/females.  We regularly get orders from customers asking us to send them 1 pair which is just not likely, or our personal favorite: "Please send me 1 pregnant female."  This kind of request is ridiculous and will not be honored with a reply.  Thank you for understanding, and we apologize for sounding so sarcastic.

We ship fish, shrimp & snail orders every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.  Plant orders, or Plant orders that include live shrimp, fish, and snails ALWAYS ship on Thursday. We always ship live good orders NEXT DAY SERVICE ONLY VIA FEDEX.  YOU MUST HAVE YOUR ORDER PLACED BY MONDAY NIGHT @ 7PM MST FOR A SAME WEEK DELIVERY.  ORDERS PLACED AFTER OUR ORDER DEADLINE WILL SHIP THE FOLLOWING WEEK ON THURSDAY!

WE DO NOT SELL SEXED FISH OR SHRIMP.  Please do not ask us to send you pairs or certain sexes of animals, we do not offer this service.  If you require a pair of fish/shrimp, then we highly suggest that you order more than you need in the event there are losses in your shipment anyway.

Deliveries will typically arrive to you the next morning before noon depending on your service area.  You will get an email from us the night we ship your package!  No email?
