Positives of this product: Following in line with the tremendous success of Flourite™, SeaChem has investigated other possible substrates for aquariums. Seachem Black Sand ™. is a naturally sourced fracted substrate for both saltwater and freshwater aquaria. Black Sand™ is exceptionally concentrated in iron and supply other important nutrients such as magnesium and manganese. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are therefore not necessary. Though very effective for freshwater planted aquaria, Black Sand™ is useful in all aquarium applications including saltwater, reef, or African cichlid aquaria. and additionally provides a slight buffering capability that works to stabilize pH for the long term success of any aquatic environment. Although this is a superior product that we also use ourselves in some of our growing pools, you MUST be prepared for a lengthy wash as this substrate needs to be rinsed thoroughly before initial use, your alternative is to go with Carib Sea Eco Complete products that require no rinsing at all.
