Electric Blue Dwarf Ram Cichlid
Electric Blue Ram
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi v. Electric Blue
Aka: Neon Blue Ram
Max size 2”
The Blue Ram, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, is one of the best known and most popular of all cichlids. In 2009 a new color form was introduced to the hobby and the "Electric Blue Ram" is now available. Our rams originally came from a strain started in Germany that was imported to us. These Electric Blue rams are healthy, tame, and handfed.
Regular Blue Rams were originally first introduced to the hobby in 1946 and were called Apistogramma ramireziry in 1948. Although it was described as an Apistogramma it was later renamed in 1958 Microgeophagus in the early 1980’s. Correctly renamed Mikrogeophagus in 1998. Lots of history and lots of worldwide arguing has gone on with this genus for decades!
The new brilliantly colored blue form of the Electric Blue Ram, appeared on the market in late spring 2009. This was a result of very careful cross breeding of the most colorful fish. The Electric Blue Ram is tougher to sex than standard Rams, but breeding is exactly the same.
This is one of the most highly sought after cichlids on the market right now. Easy to keep and care for: Not picky eaters and are not aggressive. They can be easily spawned but successfully raising the fry is not as easy as our hatchery makes it seem. They do best in soft acid water but are adaptable to a wide range of water parameters. They require higher water temps of at least 80 degrees F. They seem most content when kept over a sand substrate where they will spend hours sifting the sand through their gills filtering out any food bits they find.
NATIVE TO INFO: Rams are found in the savanna areas of the central and lower Orinoco River in Venezuela as well as in Columbia, in very shallow pools exposed to the direct sun in hot conditions! In their native habitats the waters are very soft with low pH between 5 and 6.5 and as low as 4.6 and as high as 7.3.
