Koi & Other Pond Fish

Japanese Koi have been known to live longer than 200 years! A typical lifespan here in the US is about 25 to 40 years. Our imported high-quality Japanese Koi are a product of many years of breeding.

Males are recognized by their concave anal section and occasionally by breeding spots on the head. Spawning may result in as many as 1,000 eggs, with fry emerging in approximately 4 to 7 days, depending on the water temperature. Feed the young fry small live foods or frozen daphnia for the first month. Gradually change their diet to flake and pellet foods. Their color will emerge in about a month or more.

Feed your Adult Koi a quality pellet with a protein content that does not exceed 30%. Japanese Koi make awesome pets and can be taught to accept food from your hand!

Ranchu Goldfish Calico Variety

aka: Buffalo Head Goldfish

Size: up tp 8" in aquarium, larger in Ponds  pH: 6.5 - 7.5 Temp: 65 -75F KH: 4-20 Origin: Japan

Chemicals: Goldfish Essential found at Aquarium Chemicals

Food: New Life Spectrum "Surface Feeder Formula" and Medium Koi Pellet found at Fish Foods

The mighty Ranchu, "King" of the goldfish of Japan! The Ranchu has a short, round body and short fins with no dorsal fin. The Ranchu Goldfish resembles the Lionhead Goldfish, but the posterior dorsal contour is much more curved on the Ranchu Goldfish. One other distinguishing feature that separates the Ranchu Goldfish from the Lionhead Goldfish is the tail, which is splayed sideways with lower lobes sometimes being located nearly horizontal on the Ranchu Goldfish. The Lionhead Goldfish on the other hand, has a tail similar to the Fantail Goldfish.

The Ranchu Goldfish was created during the Meiji Period (1870-1885). The history of the Ranchu Goldfish begins in China, but it was in Japan that the breed was really developed and perfected.  There is no official standard for Ranchu Goldfish in Japan, but there are established norms that most breeders follow. They must have a good balance between the head, body and tail and a Ranchu Goldfish should always be able to swim around in a graceful and potent manner. The size of the Ranchu Goldfish is not important in shows; it is the proportions that are central when judging this fish.

The whole body and tail of the Ranchu Goldfish can be deeply red or have a reddish yellow-orange shade. There are also Ranchu Goldfishes that sports a red and white color combination, or a combination of white and reddish yellow-orange. Some Ranchu Goldfish have red scales with a white edge, while other individuals are completely white. There is also the calico coloration, which seems to be favored over self-colored fish, this is what we sell.

In Japan, a Calico Ranchu Goldfish is called Edonishiki. You can house your Ranchu Goldfish in a pond or in an aquarium, as long as you provide it with enough space. Just like the other goldfish variants, the Ranchu Goldfish produces quite a lot of waste products and a small aquarium will soon suffer from poor water quality even with strong filtering. Too little space will also hamper the development of your Ranchu Goldfish and you will never see it reach its full potential. It will eat almost anything you feed it, and you should provide your Ranchu Goldfish with a varied diet to ensure that it gets all necessary nutrients. Flake food and pellets can be combined with fresh or frozen life foods. Also include vegetables in the diet, such as cucumber, lettuce and zucchini. Remember that all goldfish types are cold blooded, so the metabolism of your Ranchu Goldfish will depend on the water temperature. You must therefore adjust the amount of food according to seasonal temperature variations.

Japan has huge goldfish Ranchu competitions. The ranchus are shown in shallow bowls and judged from the top, unlike the Chinese goldfish breeders who judge their goldfish Ranchu from the side. Ranchu breeders come from all over the country with to compete for the title of Champion Goldfish Ranchu Breeder. The Edo Nishiki is a calico Ranchu first produced in Tokyo in 1951 by crossing a Ranchu with an Azuma Nishiki.  If you are looking for a great goldfish to collect, the "Goldfish King of Japan" is for you.

American-Flag Fish   Jordanella floridae

Size: up to 2.0 inches, pH: Slightly alkaline 7.1 up okay, (our waters range from 6.5 and up to 8.0 and they are fine here.)  Temp: 21C or 70F, or higher for spawning.  Origin:  Peninsular Florida north to St. Johns and Ochlockonee River drainages.

Food: New Life Spectrum "Community Formula" found at Fish Foods

Our company is one of the largest suppliers of this magnificent algae eating fish in the U.S.  Flagfish are ideal for consuming Brown, Black Beard Algae, Thread Algae, Hair/String Algae, and Blanketweed.  Good with most fish except bettas or small frilly-finned fish as they will pick on them.  They will do great with larger-sized fish, and other fish of same size.  They are not interested in eating snails, but they will eat small shrimp.  We have heard numerous stories from customers of Flagfish being territorial in small aquariums but not in ponds.  In larger groups (like we have them here) we have never seen this behavior.  Basically, if you have a horrific algae outbreak and you don't have small fish or shrimp, these will come in and fix the problem, fast. Ideal for any sized pond or lake with a hair algae problem.

Rule of thumb stocking: About 1 or 2 Flagfish per 5 to 10 gallons of aquarium water. or 2 flag fish per sq. foot of surface pond area.

Chinese High Fin Banded Shark  Myxocyprinus asiaticus

a.k.a. Chinese High Fin Sucker, Sailfin Sucker, Topsail Sucker, Asian Sucker, Chinese Sucker, Wimple Carp, Freshwater Batfish, Hilsa Herring, Rough Fish, Entsuyui (Japanese).

Size: up to 39" in it's wild pH: versatile 6.4 - 7.8 kH: 4-20, Temp: 55-85F Origin: SE Asia

Food: Green Hair or Filamentous Algae, Black Brush Algae, supplement with New Life Spectrum "Community Formula" or "H20 Stable Wafers" found at Fish Foods

The "Shark" appellation is a fanciful trade name due to some slight resemblance to a shark. This is a temperate (not tropical) water bottom feeder native to the Yangtze river in China.  The mature length up to a meter (39 inches) only in it's wild, but it is not known if aquarium kept individuals will survive long enough to reach this size.  We have many customers across the country who have raised them in their ponds for many years.  The largest we have seen personally is about 18".  Here is a picture of some very large Hi Fins at The Beijing Aquarium

These are very slow moving fish, graceful and peaceful.  They are Omnivores (but strongly herbivorous). They feed on benthic (bottom-dwelling) invertebrates and also rasp algae from rocks and logs.  But the best thing about these fish is they handle cold water wonderfully, and they eat allot of algae.  We highly suggest this fish as a beneficial part of any ecosystem.  Now obviously these fish will not get huge in an aquarium, unless your aquarium is huge, but many people will raise them from young in the house and move them outdoors when they reach  perhaps 6" or more.  This is done when the waters outside are above 65 degrees, then let them acclimate naturally to the normal seasons outdoors, they will be fine.

Body shape and coloration changes radically with maturity.  Native to moving, cool water streams and rivers, so provide some water movement and well oxygenated water. Feed with sinking algae and plant matter containing foods (algae wafers and pellets, sinking pellets). These are a schooling fish, therefore it would be best to keep them in groups (likelihood of survival without a school not known).

Blue Channel Catfish  Ictalurus punctatus

Size: shipped about 2" plus, these will grow into the habitat they are released into  pH: 6.5 - 8.2 versatile  Temp: versatile  Origin: Florida except the Keys.

Blue Channel cats have a small, narrow head. The back is blue-gray with light blue to silvery-gray sides and a white belly with some spots on the sides. Larger channels lose the black spots and also take on a blue-black coloration on the back which shades to white on the belly. Males also become very dark during spawning season and develop a thickened pad on their head.  They prefer some current, and deep water with sand, gravel or rubble bottoms. Blue Channel catfish also inhabit streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs and ponds. They adapt well in standing water where stocked.  Spawning occurs mostly in rivers and streams in the spring and early summer when waters warm to 70 to 85 degrees. Eggs are deposited in nests secluded under banks or logs or over open bottom. The male selects the site, often a natural cavern or hole, clears the nest and guards the eggs and young. A female may lay 2,000 to 21,000 eggs that hatch in six to 10 days depending on water temperature. Males protect the fry until they leave the nest in about a week.
Feeding Habits - Feeds primarily at night using taste buds in the sensitive barbels and throughout the skin to locate prey. Although they normally feed on the bottom, channels also will feed at the surface and at mid-depth. Major foods are aquatic insects, larvaes, crayfish, mollusks, crustaceans and small fish.  Small channels consume invertebrates, but larger ones may eat fish. Age and Growth - Maximum size attained in Florida is about 45 pounds. The fish's weight generally averages two to four pounds. Studies indicate 14 years as the maximum age, but some fish probably live 15 to 20 years.
Records - World Record: 58 pounds, caught in the Santee-Cooper Reservoir, South Carolina, in 1964.

Bullfrog Tadpoles  Rana catesbeiana

The bullfrog is the largest frog in North America.  It grows to 9-15 cm. in length.  Its back is green to brown and its belly is an off white.  The tympanic membrane (the membrane of the ear that vibrates sound) in males is larger than the eye, and in females it is the same size as the eye. They are nocturnal, although their call may be heard throughout the day.  Between May and early fall females lay groups of about 12,000 eggs in a thin sheet covered by a film on the waters surface.  The egg sheet is attached to submerged vegetation. The sheets of eggs have been noted to be up to five feet in width. The eggs hatch in about five days and the tadpoles are olive green and may grow up to seven centimeters before metamorphosis.  Bullfrogs are found near large bodies of water, slow moving streams, and marshes.  Bullfrogs require significant amounts of protective vegetative cover in their habitat.  Plants such as Lilies, poppies, snowflakes, frogbit, and most oxygenators are ideal for them to seek refuge.  During winter, bullfrogs hibernate at the bottom of the water. Their diet consists of small mammals, snakes, frogs, insects, and crayfish.  Tadpoles will feed mostly on small pellet food, and most importantly larvae of all kinds, dragonfly and especially Mosquito larvae!
