Bettas & Gouramis

Chocolate Gourami

Sphaerichthys osphromenoides

Size: max up to 2.5"  pH: 6.0 - 7.0 Temp: 75 -86F KH: 2-4 Origin: Malaysia

Additives: Freshwater Essential found at Aquarium Additives

Food:  New Life Spectrum "Community or Finicky Formula" and Zoo Plankton found at Fish Foods

A peaceful omnivore that has a greenish-brown body and yellow stripes running vertically along its body. There is a dark, almost black 'spot' at the base of the tail.

The Chocolate Gourami is a delicate fish that should be housed in at least a 20 gallon tank. It is prone to bacteria and skin parasites, so good water quality is required. The Chocolate Gourami prefers a well-established, thickly planted tank, with peat extract. Frequent water changes are a must.  They do best if kept in pairs and are compatible with other shy, peaceful fish as tank mates.

The best way to differentiate between the male and female is the yellow border that extends along the edge of the male's anal and caudal fins.  The Chocolate Gourami is a mouth brooder that spawns infrequently.  The male and female will spawn on the bottom of the tank and the female collects the eggs in her mouth. She will hold the eggs for 14 days during which time she does not eat, therefore, it is important that the female be in her best condition before breeding.

Dwarf Honey-Red Gourami   Colisa chuna

Size: Up to 2 pH: 6.0 - 7.5, thrive at 6.8  Temp: 72-84F  Origin: Indian Rivers & SE Asia

Additives:  Freshwater Essential found at Aquarium Additives

Food: New Life Spectrum "Community Fish Formula" found at Fish Foods

The Dwarf Honey-Red Gourami is an omnivore Labyrinth Fish like a Betta, so it must have access to the surface of your aquarium to breathe.  We've had numerous requests to carry this fish due to the appealing small dwarf size, and the shortage of females apparently not available to the public.  Both male and female of this species are similar in color except the males become a more honey-red color and also have more prominent striping during courting and spawning.  We have found this species to be very easy to care for, and not very demanding.  They are a very peaceful fish that seem to mind their own business and not too finicky of an eater as well.  During spawning the male will build a bubblenest and may become territorial toward other fish.  Males should be removed from tank after spawning and females a couple days after hatching as they will eat the frye.  These fish prefer a heavily planted aquarium   An ideal addition to most community tanks with livebearers, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Loaches, Barbs, plecos, and most scavengers.

Snakeskin Gourami Trichogaster pectoralis

a.k.a. Pygmy Gourami, Green Croaking Gourami, Purring Gourami

Size: max up to 8"  pH: 6.0 - 7.0 Temp: 72 -78F Origin: Cambodia, Thailand

Additives: Freshwater Essential found at Aquarium Additives

Food: New Life Spectrum "Surface Feeder Formula" found at Fish Foods

If you want to keep or breed the Snakeskin Gourami make sure you have a good sized aquarium. Not only does this fish get quite large in captivity, up to 8" (20 cm), but its spawns are also unusually large. There can be as many as 5,000 fry from a single spawning period. These are hardy fish but even better than that they are an exceptionally peaceful gourami, making them an excellent candidate for a community aquarium. Though not necessarily the most beautiful gourami they do have a rather striking appearance. Juveniles are especially notable, having strong zig-zag lines from the eye to the base of the tail.

Some labyrinth fish have voices!...and the Snakeskin Gourami is no exception. The fish has a kind of vocalization that sounds like croaking, or growling, or cracking tones. This is generally most pronounced during breeding or with territorial type behavior, but whether it has any special function is unknown.

Sparkling Gourami Trichopsis pumilus or Ctenops pumilus

This is another VERY small and very colorful Gourami in which both the sexes are about equally colored with iridescent blues, reds, and greens with blue and green spots.  The typical way to tell the difference between a male or female is to look for the female's ovaries with a bright light.  This is another very shy, and peaceful fish we offer that is easy to keep, and breed.  They come from the shallow waters of Cambodia so they are ideal for small aquariums.  They will thrive best in tanks that are well-planted with rocks.  This Gourami is an omnivore that is known to nibble on algae.  Remember how little this fish stays when considering your purchase.

Betta Trichopsis pumilus or Ctenops pumilus

a.k.a. Siamese Fighting Fish

Native to: Southeast Asia, Southern Asia, Tropical Africa

Members of this family -- denizens in the wild of oxygen-starved waters, can frequently be seen gulping air at the surface; it is perfectly normal for them to do this, as they possess an extra breathing organ (Labyrinth Organ) for this very purpose.

The more colorful varieties are predatory, so care should be taken in choosing companions for them. The rest are comparatively peaceful, but can be noisy when breeding or when out of the water.  Males will know when it is time to breed.  He will build a bubblenest with his mouth.  Then the male and the female will stay near the bottom of the bubblenest to spawn.  The male wraps his body around the female during courtship. The females eggs are released and then the male will release his sperm. The male will then collect the eggs in his mouth and gently wash them. He then proceeds to place the eggs into the bubble nest. the male continues to take on the responsibility of guarding theA common red twintail betta nest, and may even kill the female. Male fish can take on stronger coloration at spawning time; frequently the male has extended anal and dorsal fins.

The Betta, or Siamese fighting fish as it's better known, grows to 3" long and comes in a variety of brilliant colors, our male bettas are more commonly reds, and blues, or red/blue mixes.  Sometimes greens, rarely white or black.  Males, identifiable by their collection of fancy fins, just don't get on with each other at all, so keep only one male in your tank.

AAG BETTA HEX BOWFRONT AQUATIC GREENHOUSE®  IS A FANTASTIC GIFT IDEA!!

Great places to put these mini hex's are:

- In the office

- In the kitchen

- Next to your computer

Our Aquatic Greenhouse is a complete, almost maintenance-free ecosystem.  These small mini aquariums are very affordable!  These dwellings only require the correct diet, clean water, and light.

Bettas make good bowl fish because they can handle temperature fluctuations and have the physiological capability to breathe air.   In addition to gills, bettas also have an organ called a labyrinth, which allows them to also breath "our" air".  They are quite simple to care for, but they are living things and must not be neglected.  They must have clean water on a regular basis and be feed at least a few times per week or they will starve.  Alot of people think bettas will feed off of the roots of the plants, but this is not true!   They need fat and protein!   They get this from a wonderful product from Hikari called Betta Bio-Gold, which we include with each setup.  This amount of food should last a minimum of 3 months.  Replacement food is available for 2.99

The plant provides oxygen for the fish and the plant also absorbs the fishes waste while the snail cleans the algae from the tank. The betta should live at least one to three years, we have had some live longer.  A replacement betta can be purchased from local pet store for as little as 2.99 to 3.99 on sale at some pet stores.  Our bettas cost 3.99 each for males, 4.99 for females.

Other small species of fish such as fancy guppies, white clouds and danios can also be used.  They are also able to tolerate temperature fluctuations.

If the tank has too many fish, or the animals are too large for the aquarium their health will likely suffer.  Water quality is also very important. If you have poor water quality, the fish aren't going to be living as long as they should and their colors won't be as good.

Educate yourself about bettas!  There is so much information available on the internet.   Bettas are living things.  Please take care of your betta and give them loving attention.   They know when you neglect them.   A great spot for your betta is in your kitchen or in your office!  These are places where your betta will enjoy watching you and you can give them the attention they deserve.  All of our Aquatic Greenhouse come with a small sheet of instructions on the care of your tank.
